Storage or instantaneous water heater?

Comparison between electronic instantaneous water heaters and hot water tanks (or conventional hydraulic instantaneous water heaters)

The direct comparison between electronic instantaneous water heaters and other decentralised systems (e.g. hot water storage tanks or conventional hydraulic instantaneous water heaters) shows that instantaneous water heaters have many advantages:

Instantaneous water heaters are particularly efficient because they only heat the water when needed.
Storage heaters, on the other hand, store a certain amount of hot water and keep it at the set temperature at all times.

Instantaneous water heaters do not consume standby energy.
Hot water storage heaters consume standby power every day, regardless of whether water is drawn or not.

Instantaneous water heaters are significantly smaller than storage heaters, which means that they can also be used very well on small hand-wash basins. When compact instantaneous water heaters are used in the kitchen, the valuable space in the base cabinet can be used for other useful things, e.g. waste separation systems.
This is usually not possible with storage units, as they take up all the available space under the sink on their own.

Instantaneous water heaters can provide unlimited hot water.
When the amount of water stored in a tank has been withdrawn, new cold water must be heated, which can take an hour or even longer, depending on the performance and capacity of the unit.

Thanks to intelligent control and innovative technology, the most powerful electric comfort instantaneous water heaters provide a high level of hot water comfort in showers and bathrooms.
Large hot water heaters, on the other hand, do not offer modern options such as touch display or radio remote control, which correspond to the current state of the art for E-comfort instantaneous water heaters.

Small instantaneous water heater vs. small storage heaters

Small instantaneous water heater vs. small storage heaters

A small instantaneous electric water heater M3 (3.5 kW output at a tap flow rate of 2 l / min) was compared with a 5-litre storage heater (standby energy consumption: 0.25 kWh / d at a tap flow rate of 5 l / min) in the sanitary room of an office building with the following parameters:

Daily frequency of use: 10 times
Useful life: 10 seconds each
Useful temperature: approx. 38 °C
Number of days of use: 230 days
Electricity price per kWh: 0.25 Euro
Water and waste water costs: 4.30 Euro per m³

Considering the lower water consumption and the heat radiation of temperature control valves in conventional small storage heaters, a small instantaneous water heater can save up to 70 euros a year.

The CFX-U electronic compact instantaneous water heater (flow rate of 5 l/min at 45 °C) was compared with a 5-litre storage heater (standby energy consumption 0.25 kWh / d at 65 °C) and a required mixed water quantity of 7.5 l/min in a 3-person household with the following parameters:

Daily use per person: 2 minutes
Useful temperature: 45 °C
Number of days of use: 340 days
Electricity price per kWh: 0.25 Euro
Water and waste water costs: 4.30 Euro per m³

Considering the lower water consumption, a compact instantaneous water heater can save up to 90 euros per year, depending on the tariff.

The E-comfort instantaneous water heater DSX (flow rate of 8 litres per minute at exactly 38 °C) was compared with a hydraulic instantaneous water heater 21 kW with a mixing water quantity of 11.6 l / min necessary for 38 °C in a 3-person household with the following parameters:

Daily usage per person: 4 minutes
Inlet temperature: 12 °C
Number of days of use: 330 days
Electricity price per kWh: 0.25 Euro
Water and waste water costs: 4.30 Euro per m³

With an electronic instantaneous water heater, annual savings of up to 160 euros can be made compared to a hydraulic unit. A device replacement is therefore worthwhile, because the purchase costs are quickly amortized.
